Spousal open work permit & work permit
Foreign nationals in most cases will require a valid work permit to make them eligible to work in Canada. This can either be an employer specific or an open work permit. You can apply for a work permit with or without a job offer, with or without (exempt) Labour Market Impact Assessment. You can apply for your family members’ open work permit alongside your application as well.
You may not need to provide a language test result but you may still be need to submit your biometrics and your medical exam results.
Spousal open work permit (SOWP): If you are on a work permit or an international student, your spouse (common-law and/or married) may be eligible for an open work permit.
SOWP applications on or after April 30, 2024 (as of December 25, 2024): your spouse may be eligible for an open work permit if you’re on a valid study permit and you’re studying in a master’s or a doctoral degree program, participating in an eligible pilot program or studying an eligible professional degree program at a university. Caution must be taken because the federal government has been constantly re-evaluating this program.
